About 5 billion years ago (or so it is beggining to feel like) I was contacted by a publisher who provided me with a free copy of Get It Done by Michael Macintosh in exchange for an honest review. Having waded through a TBR (to be read) list that would rival Hermione Granger’s I have finally managed to read the book!

The foreword of Get It Done advises that it is for creative entrepreneurs. I think we all know one of these people. They’ve never really been 100% happy with working for other people and want to go out there and create a business of their own. I would just like to preface the rest of this review by saying that I am not the target audience. I have zero interest in being an entrepreneur and was quickly labelled by the book itself as one of life’s planners – who aren’t the types that this book is aimed at.

Nevertheless it did contain some interesting insights. Quite early on in the book I noticed the theme of trying to get rid of unnecessary noise in your life and focus on what you really want. It really reminded me of the core message in Buddhism for Busy People that I recently reviewed. It wasn’t till later on in the book that I realised quite how spiritual Macintosh was. He has probably read Buddhism for Busy People himself!

There were also parts of the book that I definitely identified with. For example the part about setting an external accountability for your actions. That’s exactly what I did with my 52 book challenge. I told as many people as possible that I was going to read a book a week for a year. This meant that I had to do it. If I didn’t I would have been beleaguered by people constantly asking me about my reading. I would have looked a fool.

So how does this book work? Get It Done promises to help you change your ways in 21 days or less. There are three parts to the book:

  • Part 1 – 11 essential mind hacks
  • Part 2 – How to do the Get it Done in 21 Days challenge
  • Part 3 – Setting your own 21 day challenge with links to online resources, videos etc.

The theory behind this is that once you have done your first 21 day challenge you can then do more. So you aren’t necessarily aiming to become an award winning actor and win an Oscar in 21 days, but your goal will be something more achievable yet still stretching enough that you haven’t already done it yet.

The book contains templates and steps to make your ideas a reality. Can you use this book to get results in 21 days? Probably. The fact is that if you have the energy, the motivation and the drive to do it then the tools are right inside this book. If you’re going to spend hours procrastinating and then go watch Game of Thrones then this book will accomplish nothing. The power lies within you, this book is just a tool. That said, it is a neatly put together tool that sets everything out clearly, if occasionally a little repetitively.

I did feel however that Macintosh assumes that everyone is just hanging about with oodles of time. Perhaps it is because I am not the target audience but I didn’t think these methods were all compatible with lifestyles where people are looking after children or other dependants and holding down a job or studying. Though of course some of the methods he uses (such as setting up external accountability) can be applied to anything.

Overall I felt that this book is perfect for its intended audience: the go getting business brains out there. If this is you then you will love it. So if you feel like you need some inspiration and some guidance on your way with a new project in your life then pick up this book, it will be your faithful companion right the way to your (hopeful) success!
